Theory of machines

Theory of Machines: It may be defined as the branch of engineering science which deals with the study of relative motion between the various parts of a machine and the various forces acting on these parts. The subject is essential for designing the various parts of a machine.

It can be divided into four sub parts.

1. Kinematics: It is that branch which deals only with the relative motion between the various parts of a machine.

2. Dynamics: It deals with the forces acting on the various parts of a machine and their effects, when the parts are in motion.

3. Kinetics: It deals with the inertia forces which arise from the mass and motion of the machine parts.

4. Statics: It is that branch which deals with the forces and their effects on parts of a machine at rest.
