Cutting fluids

Mechanical Engineering

Cutting fluids:

It serves the purposes of coolant as well as lubricant. The cutting fluids are used in metal machining operations. The function of cutting fluid is to

  • Flushing away the chips from work piece or job

  • It cools the tool and the work piece.

  • To decrease the friction between the tool and work piece. It also increases the tool life.

Characteristics of a good cutting fluid:

  • It should have high flash point.

  • It should provide the lubrication between work piece and tool.

  • It should have anti corrosion constituents.

  • It should carry away the heat generated during the process.

  • It should be non toxic, nonflammable and transparent.

  • It should have a long life.

Types of cutting fluids:

Soluble oils – It consists of mineral oil and emulsifier.

Semi-synthetic oils – It consists of both mineral oils and synthetic chemicals.

Synthetic oils – It contains synthetic chemicals.

Straight cutting oils – These are petroleum based mineral oils.
