Difference between Capstan Lathe and Turret Lathe
Difference between Capstan Lathe and Turret Lathe
Capstan Lathe:
- Capstan lathe is a light duty machine.
- Saddle of the machine do not move during machining.
- It is used to machine only short work pieces.
- Turret head can be easily moved as it slides over the ram.
- Work pieces of up to 60 mm diameter can be machined on it.
- The lengthwise movement of turret is less.
- In Capstan lathe, turret head is mounted on the ram and the ram is mounted on the saddle.
- It is not possible to give heavy cuts as construction of machine is not rigid.
- Work piece is held in a collet.
- As the turret head slides over the ram so it is easy to move the turret head.
Turret Lathe:
- Turret lathe is a heavy duty machine.
- Saddle of the machine moves along with turret head during machining.
- It can be used to machine long work pieces.
- Turret head can be moved crosswise in some of the turret lathes.
- It can be used to machine work pieces of up to 200 mm diameter.
- The lengthwise movement of turret is more.
- In turret lathe, turret head is directly mounted on the saddle and the saddle slides over the bed ways.
- It is possible to give heavy cuts as construction of machine is rigid.
- Work piece is held in a jaw chuck.
- The movement of the turret head along with saddle is difficult.
