Electron beam welding

Mechanical Engineering

Electron Beam Welding:

– The kinetic energy of the high velocity electron beam is converted into heat energy and that heat energy produces a deep penetration weld with a high depth/width ratio. The two pieces to be joined are brought close together and the electron beam is directed to the gap between the pieces.

– The electrons are emitted by a hot filament of tungsten or tantalum.

– The whole process is carried out in vacuum so there is no contamination due to atmospheric gases and no flux or shielding gas is required during welding.

– This process is suitable for reactive metals like titanium, zirconium etc. It is used in automotive and aerospace industries.
