Models of Organisational Behavior

Models of Organisational Behavior:

Every organisation is different in terms of organisational behavior they build up. These differences are caused due to models of organisation behavior being in trend in every organisation. Organisational behavior models followed by managers are not static and change after some time span according to the industrial environment. The overview of these models is as follows.

Autocratic Model: Autocratic model depends upon the power given to the boss. In autocratic atmosphere authority given to the manager by right of command is the official authority. It assumes that employees work only after they are pushed and directed by the managers and they have to follow the order of manager.   Workers work under threat of not getting rewards for not giving better performance. Management has tight control over the employees at work. Performance of employees may vary as some employees give less performance under pressure and some work only when they are dealt strictly. This model is successful where workers are lazy and work shirker.

Custodial Model: In the custodial approach employee depend on the organization rather than on the manager.  According to the custodial model, employees are motivated to improve their performance financial incentive like bonuses and benefits for high performance. The custodial model is based on the theory of giving financial security for employees – through wages and other benefits – that lead to loyalty and motivation. Money may does not act as motivation sometime as employees have other psychological needs too.

Supportive Model: The supportive model of ob depends on leadership aspect not the power or money. Employees are provided with the environment that helps them grow and achieve personal and organisation goals. Focus is on developing skills and behavior of employee rather than giving threat or offering financial benefit for performance. Workers are given support by managers for fulfilling tasks and made them take responsibility towards organisational goals. They feel sense of relatedness that satisfies their security and psychological needs.

Collegial Model: It is extension of supportive model that gives feeling of partnership with employees. Employees feel that managers are also working along with them. They see managers as joint contributors rather than bosses. The orientation is team building and team work. The overall work atmosphere and culture is cooperative where everyone is actively participating and not about status and job positions. Every employee is encouraged to work as team to build a better organisation. The employees are self disciplined and feel enthusiastic.
